All about Matcha Premium
Matcha Premium is Japanese matcha from the first spring harvest (ichibancha) of 2025 in Kagoshima prefecture, ground on stone mills. It is milder than Daily: a step up for lattes that you can also drink with water only, as a matcha shot. A 50 g pouch makes about 25 servings of 2 g, which is about PLN 5.16 per serving. It contains only ground tencha.

What is Matcha Premium?
It is powdered tencha leaves: tea grown in the shade before harvest. The leaves come from the first spring harvest, ichibancha in Japanese, are dried without rolling and ground on stone mills into a fine powder. You drink the whole ground leaf, not an infusion. Read more about how matcha is made in What is matcha.
Where does it come from?
From Kagoshima, a prefecture at the southern tip of Kyushu island. It is now the largest tencha producer in Japan: according to the producers' association, Kagoshima supplied 2,670 of 6,278 tonnes in 2025, about 43%. In 2024 it overtook Shizuoka in total tea production for the first time. We cover the history of the regions, from Uji to Kagoshima, in Where does matcha come from.
What does it taste like?
It has an intense green colour, a thick foam when whisked and an umami taste milder than Matcha Daily. In a latte it gives a fuller, less bitter taste, and whisked with water only it works as a matcha shot. If you mostly drink matcha with water, Matcha Unique has the least bitterness.
How to prepare Matcha Premium?
Latte: whisk 2 g of matcha with 40 ml of water at 70–80°C, pour 150–200 ml of milk into a glass (with ice for an iced latte) and pour the matcha on top.
With water: sift 1–2 g of matcha (half to one level teaspoon) into a bowl, add 60–80 ml of water at 70–80°C and whisk with a chasen in an M shape for 15–20 seconds, until a fine foam forms. Boiling water brings out bitterness, so the water should be noticeably cooler. We explain why temperature matters in What water temperature for matcha.
How long does one pouch last?
| Serving | Servings per 50 g | Cost per serving |
|---|---|---|
| 1 g (lighter matcha with water) | about 50 | about PLN 2.58 |
| 2 g (standard) | about 25 | about PLN 5.16 |
How much caffeine is in a serving?
In a study by Kochman et al. (2020), matcha contained 18.9 to 44.4 mg of caffeine per gram, so a 1 g serving has roughly 19–44 mg and 2 g has 38–89 mg. The exact amount depends on the batch. More in Does matcha contain caffeine?

How to store matcha?
Keep the pack tightly closed, away from light, heat and strong smells. Matcha loses colour and aroma over time, so the Japanese tea house Ippodo recommends using it within about a month of opening. If you keep it in the fridge, let the pack warm up to room temperature before opening it, so no moisture gets inside.
What else will you need?
For whisking, a bamboo chasen works best, and for lattes a bowl with a spout is handy, like the Matchawan Emerald. No chasen? See what to use instead.
